Xpeng Launches Nationwide XNGP Update: A Leap Forward in Smart Driving Capabilities
Xpeng, the leading Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has started rolling out its comprehensive XNGP (Xpeng Navigation Guided Pilot) feature to all eligible vehicles in China. This marks the largest update to the company’s smart driving technology since its inception.
Xpeng is deploying its advanced Tianji XOS 5.2.0 software, powered by AI, to users across China. The update brings significant enhancements to the XNGP system, which has been in beta testing for several months. As of today, the updated XNGP feature is available for use on all public roads in China.
XNGP is Xpeng’s Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), comparable to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability. Initially limited to highways under the name Highway NGP, Xpeng has since expanded its coverage to include urban environments, referred to as City NGP. Now, all of Xpeng’s ADAS features are collectively known as XNGP.
According to He Xiaopeng, Chairman and CEO of Xpeng, XNGP was made available on all roads in China earlier this year. However, the company conducted extensive real-world testing for over six months to ensure the highest level of safety. To date, XNGP has undergone over 7.56 million kilometers of testing.
XNGP utilizes end-to-end AI large model technology, making Xpeng one of only two automakers worldwide to implement this technology in their intelligent driving systems. Although Mr. He did not explicitly name the other automaker, it is widely understood to be Tesla. During his recent visit to the United States, Mr. He had the opportunity to test Tesla’s FSD and expressed high praise for the software.
With the latest XNGP update, vehicles equipped with the feature can now navigate any public road in China where navigation coverage is available. In the most recent public beta, the AI chauffeur function enables vehicles to pass through toll booths automatically. Xpeng anticipates that by the fourth quarter of this year, XNGP will also handle parking lot gates and internal campus roads, providing a seamless “door-to-door” experience.
Xpeng projects that by the end of 2025 and into early 2026, the frequency of safety takeovers and efficiency takeovers for XNGP will be significantly reduced, allowing users to fully enjoy the benefits of the feature.
Thanks to end-to-end technology, Xpeng’s OTA (over-the-air) updates have seen rapid development, with one version iteration every two days and one experience upgrade every two weeks. Since its introduction on May 20, Tianji OS has received five updates within just 70 days, achieving at least 35 version iterations, surpassing the pace of the mobile industry.
Tianji XOS 5.2.0 encompasses improvements to both the XNGP and the smart cockpit system, introducing 484 feature upgrades, including enhanced phone integration. The update is currently being rolled out to the Max versions of Xpeng models, with international users set to receive the update starting August 15.
